In 1935, a local stonemason, Richard Lynn set up his own business based in Commercial Road in Hawick. Operating within the local area, he worked with private customers on many small building projects. Expanding in 1958, he moved his business to its current location where the name James Swinton had already been established. He made the decision to retain the name and the Company flourished to become the successful, family run business that it is today.
James Swinton & Company Limited has almost 50 years of history behind it, honouring and completing various contracts, large and small, within time and within budget. This has helped us gain an excellent reputation and over the years we have become a well respected construction Company renowned throughout the South East of Scotland. Working with clients from both the public and private sector we offer the whole range of building services and have been responsible for the construction of education premises, medical centres, office developments, private housing estates and social housing schemes, amongst many more.
Our decades of experience and quality of work have allowed us to develop strong, long-term relationships with both our suppliers and clients. These strong relationships have undoubtedly contributed to the success of James Swinton over the years and we are proud to be associated with clients such as
- Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council
- Berwickshire Housing Association
- Borders Health Board
- Eildon Housing Association Ltd.
- Scottish Borders Housing Association Ltd.
- Scottish Borders Council
We are committed to providing the highest possible standard of craftsmanship and this is emphasised by the importance we place on staff training. As an existing member of the Construction Industry Training Board, we operate a full modern apprenticeship scheme for school leavers. We also provide comprehensive training programmes for all our employees and later this year they will all have gained the industry recognised Construction Skills Certification Scheme qualification card. It is this dedication to employee development that helped us to be recognised as Investors In People in February 2002.
Providing an excellent customer service is something that James Swinton and Company Limited are committed to. Inevitably, there can be problems that occur during any project, some that are beyond our control. As a company, we believe the key to high customer service levels is down to an effective two-way communication channel. We always keep our clients informed if there are any problems and we always encourage our clients to communicate to us any difficulties that may occur. This enables us to quickly respond to and correct any potential problem that may occur.

“We won new build awards and advanced our Improvements Programme ahead of schedule but suffered several setbacks, notably contract delays through supply problems with doors and windows. Problems, which we are especially grateful to our contractor, James Swinton, for handling constructively and with a minimum disruption to tenants.”

As a Company, we have gained a reputation for supporting the local community both commercially and socially. Where possible we endeavour to use subcontractors from within the Borders area. We also contribute to the Training for Work programme, initiated by Scottish Enterprise Borders, which facilitates the training and return to work of the long-term unemployed and those who have been made redundant. This illustrates our commitment to strengthening the local economy. We also support many annual social events within the town.
